I would happily have joined in AaG's thread about Blondie's birthday on the previous page but, for some mysterious reason, that latter page didn't appear on my screen, any more than this present one, for more than one day and all of a sudden they came out late yesterday evening. Funny technical phenomenon, indeed.

(How) Does Truth Set Free?
by Narkissos in"the truth shall set you free" (cf.
john 8:32) is the kind of sentence that potentially transcends any contextual setting.
as we know only too well, it has been used over and over again in religious propaganda and is very easy to return against it (i.e.

Narkissos,
We may never know what Truth is, unless God, if He exists, let us know, maybe one day. For the time being Jesus' words assure us that there is a truth but He indeed doesn't tell us much about it. If I ever know anything, one of the best things I know is that, like pudding, I proved the veracity of at least some aspects of the JWs' teachings in the most practical way since I stopped smoking during the time I was *studying* with them, 30 years ago. I know all their shortcomings and yet I'm grateful to their truth for having set me free from tobacco addiction and being still here to bear witness to it. (between you and me : you know that the last volume issued next thursday with Le Monde is HUME, the empiricist, let's not miss it !)

How Did You Deal With Weirdo Witnesses?
by minimus ini know that some believe all jws are "weird".
but i'm not talking about that.. there are some real weird witnesses!
you know, the ones everyone had in their hall that everyone talked about or laughed at.. we had one 25 year old man who was pioneering and he used to go out to literally every neighborhood in the city.

We had a funny guy in a London congregation who would refuse to blow his nose and he explained to me that King David must have made sacrifices to please Jehovah, such as refraining from going to the toilet. He went to the district assembly running (londoners will appreciate) from Steatham to Twickenham.

men kept for unnatural purposes?
by gotime insomewhere in the new testament it lists grave sins that would prevent one from inheriting the kingdom.
"men kept for unnatural purposes" is listed.
are we talking prostitutes?
-

I read somewhere that it could refer to young men being kept by old lustful women that is, gigolos. It would tally with the phrase being different, in the text, from the previous one about homosexuals but you can hardly say that such purposes are unnatural.

...or question why others are making such an effort to preach to people from another country
I just found a discrepancy between the English and the French versions of this passage. Whereas the English version seems to be understood as meaning that we should not wonder what motives draw some JWs to learn a foreign language so as to preach to foreigners, the French versions reads "...ni mettre en doute l'utilité de prêcher à des personnes originaires d'un pays étranger". That sentence means that we shouldn't doubt the usefulness of such preaching , which is not quite the same thing. As I don't think that translators didn't see the difference, it implies that branches have a certain degree of freedom as to adapting the text to the local surrounding. Is it that the original text was less acceptable to the French readers because it carries the idea that JWs can be suspicious (oh dear..) as to others' motives and, consequently, that American JWs are more used to JWs being suspicious ? Unless I didn't get the right meaning of the English version.

Thanks, Blondie, for your research work and comments,
Certainly we would not want to be negative or question why others are making such an effort to preach to people from another country.
I venture an explanation to some JWs learning a new language and joining a foreign speaking congregation. I noticed that in my area, mainly young sisters do that, when it becomes obvious that they won't find a husband in their original congregation. They are ideal preys to guys who stay illegally in the country and will try marriage as a means of regularization. Sometimes it works and you won't keep a few eyebrows from rising.

Gay Marriage - The War for Equality
by Inquisitor ini've just read lola28's thread "for those against gay marriage".
i thought i should present a clear message on what i think the gay marriage issue is all about.
the trouble with most discussions on this issue is that it gets clouded by a plethora of side-issues, non-issues, cave-men chest-thumping and medieval puritanism.

Deviancy from what?
Cog,
for a comprehensive information, I suggest you compare feminine and masculine genitals and see for yourself how they fit with each other, then do the same with masculine ones and check that they don't.

using fashion as an example
Yes, that's what I mean. Who other than gays can possibly have imposed twiggies as model patterns ?
